Are You Getting Enough Beauty Sleep?

And What to Do If You’re Not!

Not sleeping eight totally restful, re-charging, dream-weaving hours a night? You’re not alone. An estimated 50-70 million Americans suffer from some kind of sleep disorder.  You can blame it on stressful work schedules, round-the-clock access to technology, financial worries – you name it.

If you’re still reading, I’m assuming you are one of the 70 million – like me – who don’t get enough beauty sleep.

You don’t need me to enumerate the myriad ways sleep deprivation takes it toll. So let’s focus on one:  how it affects the way you look.  I’m not just talking about the short term affects like puffy eyes and dark circles.   Or even the  way being tired,  and consequently on edge and angry, can make you appear older than you are. I’m referring to the long term affects it can have.  Now I have to stop one quick moment here, before I frighten you into not reading on.  I would never write about a problem that I didn’t have an answer for.  So relax (if you can).

One of the long term affects of insufficient sleep is elevated cortisol levels.  Aside from its affect of belly fat, cortisol can destroy collagen.  The very collagen that gives structural support to you face.  That gives your skin its elasticity.  The same collagen that prevents fine lines and wrinkles for forming.

That’s the real need for “beauty rest” – preventing collagen degradation. So what can you do to sleep better.  Longer.  More restful.   Or, if not, how you can re-gain lost collagen! Here are a few tips for a better nights sleep.  But… caveat emptor!  If you snore – or have sleep apnea – these are not likely going to help.  If that’s you – jump down a few paragraphs and go directly to “How to Gain Lost Collagen.

Seven “Sleep Sounder” Tips

  1. Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. .
  2. Don’t eat a big meal too late in the day.
  3. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, but not late at night.
  4. Sleep under a warm blanket in a cool, dark, quiet room.
  5. Keep electronics out of the bedroom.
  6. Use breathable cotton sheets and wash them regularly, so they don’t collect dust mites and bacteria.
  7. Use laundry detergents that don’t have strong fragrances, which can be irritating to skin.

I should also include a healthy dose of physical exercise.  Try it, it works.  Now let’s get to the part where you can prevent and even un-do the beauty damaging affects of poor sleep…

How to Gain Collagen

Remember, collagen is what “plumps” out your skin preventing wrinkles.  Collagen  gives your face elasticity or “bounce back.”   So every time you laugh or frown, it’s not forming a wrinkle or fine line.   What’s more, collagen is what gives your skin a healthy glow due to  its it’s “Light Reflection Index” (LRI).   You see, collagen acts as mirrors, and when light reflects off of the dermal collagen and through your capillaries it creates radiance.  There’s a product mentioned in New Your Magazine called  BioSil .  It’s  been proven in double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials to reduce fine line and wrinkles 30% and increase skin elasticity 89%.  What more BioSil’s collagen-generating properties also increases hair strength and thickness by 13%.  As well as hair shine.

But if you’re thinking about Googling “foods that contain collagen” or “pills, powders, or peptides made out of collagen – STOP! Understand, collagen is a protein. When you ingest collagen, as in the pills, powders and peptides,   your body breaks it down and uses it  as food.  It treats it as  chicken, fish, steak or any other protein.  The key is activating the enzymes that generate collagen. BioSil activates these enzymes so you gain collagen through your body’s natural collagen-generating pathways.  It’s collagen with your own DNA fingerprint!   Now if this sounds like a giant endorsement for BioSil – it is!!!  I love this product.  And by the way, you should check out the latest article in the New York Magazine called  “Secrets From Kim Kardashian’s Hairstylist.”  There, she flat out states… “I’m a BioSil Person!!!”

So now you have one less thing to worry about.  Maybe that will help you sleep a little better.  If not, get some BioSil, people will think you get 10 hours of beauty rest every night!
